A list of bigger hikes I did with an eye towards doing Mt. Whitney in August. Ideally this list would have been much larger. A few injuries put a big dent in my preparations, chronic heel pain from Plantar Fasciitis that I let go so long I developed bone spurs in my heels, and in June, a torn hamstring while doing windsprints chasing balls with the dogs. After completing the White Mountain hike in July I felt I was pretty well prepared.
February
Coe Mt Sizer 17.78 miles 5245' elevation gain -- if you can do this hike or the full loop Whitney will be cake.

August
In addition to this were a lot of trails runs, lunch walks and running stairs at work instead of using the elevator.
The biggest factor to me is the elevation, if you have that under control by being well hydrated and getting acclimated before your summit attempt your odds of success go way up. This all assumes the weather cooperates with you ;-)
